Hot dip galvanized reinforced steel - Benefits

Hot dip galvanized reinforced steel
  • Extremely hard and resistant coating;
  • Metallurgical bond to the substrate;
  • Stability to UV exposure;
  • Can be stored on site for long periods of time;
  • Does not require special handling condition ;
  • The corrosion rate of zinc in concrete is lower than that of steel;
  • Double protection: acts as a physical barrier against aggressive agents and as sacrificial anode - because of its less noble potential than that of the iron, will corrode first protecting the steel;
  • Zinc corrosion products have a 3 times lower volume than iron and can migrate into reinforcement adjacent concrete, filling voids and micro cracks
  • Resistance to chloride higher than the non-galvanized reinforced steel, which causes a significant delay in the occurrence of the corrosion process at the time when the chlorides reach the surface of the reinforcement;

  • Much more durable in carbonated concrete than usual reinforcement steel because zinc is passive in a much wider pH range, up to about 9.5 pH of concrete;
  • Superior corrosion resistance of hot dip galvanized reinforcing steel allows higher tolerances in terms of concrete coating thickness variation and placement of reinforcement;
  • The costs of using hot dip galvanized reinforcing steel is less than 1% of the total cost of a project, but has a huge potential to reduce future maintenance costs and extend the total lifetime of the project;
  • Given the increasing trend toward green buildings, using products that have proven to extend structures lifetime, contain over 95% recycled raw material and are themselves a 100% recyclable product, thus representing the best choice.

Tests carried out in the framework of regular inspections of concrete bridges built with galvanized fittings in the early 1970s showed that zinc layer thickness continues to be higher than the minimum standard thickness, clearly indicating that the reinforced steel hot dip galvanizing is a system that must be taken into account by engineers pursuing the execution structures with lifetime exceeding 100 years.
